Major elements in the decoration of royal and princely palaces, mirrors spread throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Adorning private rooms as well as reception rooms, they never ceased to fascinate their contemporaries with the wonderful and illusionistic effects they allowed. However, their place in the fixed decoration of aristocratic interiors had never been the subject of a specific study. Spanning two centuries and a large geographic area (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Sweden), this work aims to fill this gap by investigating the way in which mirrors have imposed themselves in architecture and have upset the ways of living.
How did they become a decorative material in their own right? Who are the actors of these sets? from their development to their execution? Who contributes to spreading the fashion? How were they put at the service of real staging and what do they reveal in terms of the history of taste? From the first mirror cabinets to the famous Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, including the sumptuous decorations of European palaces, this very richly illustrated collection invites you to explore the crossroads of decorative arts, architecture and history.
