The Vikings in France, by J. Renaud, Ed. Ouest France, 6-½ inches x 9-½ inches ( 17 cm x 24 cm ), softcover book with 128 full color pages

This softcover book with 128 full color pages retraces the history of Vikings in France.
Our history textbooks generally devote to the Vikings only a meager place with little honor and associate primarily the "barbarians from the North" to Normandy. In reality, most regions of France were "visited" by the Vikings in the 9th century: they can be found in Burgundy or the Rhone valley as well as in Flanders, Brittany or Gascony. Result: looting, ruin, death and a terrible psychological impact. However, in the future Normandy granted in 911, the advantages succeeded the disadvantages: The Scandinavian settlers have straightened up the ruins they themselves had caused and laid the foundations for a remarkable economic and political development. The author takes us in the footsteps of the Vikings throughout France and shows that if they had been merely barbarians, the Norman success would never have been possible.

Contents:

  • The Viking expansion
  • The first incursions: from Flanders to Gascony
  • Vikings bases of the Loire, the Somme and the Seine
  • The turn of the century
  • Two outstanding heads: Hrólfr and Rögnvaldr
  • The "normandy" success
  • The failure of the Vikings in Brittany
  • What remains of the presence of the Vikings in France?
  • Conclusion
  • Annexes: Genealogy, Chronology, Bibliography

The French texts are written by Jean Renaud.

Description
