This hardcover book with 400 pages, presents the life and work of André Arbus (1903-1969), the story of a loyalty to French tradition and a quest for "unity in the artistic life of his time."
The return to tradition, advocated in his article on furniture, opened up a new path in 1935 between the traditional cabinetmaking defended by Ruhlmann and the standardized "equipment" of Le Corbusier.The decorator chooses the measure of man, "this geometry of the heart" that he recognizes in the classicism of French furniture.
Official supplier to the Mobilier National in the immediate post-war period, he created furniture, carpets and lighting for the Élysée, the Château de Rambouillet, ministries and embassies. This humanist demonstrates a very broad creative register.
Designer of prestigious ocean liners, architect of "A House of the French Family" at the 1937 Exhibition, of the farmhouses of the Crau region and of maritime monuments such as the Planier lighthouse, he devoted himself to sculpture from the 1950s onwards, opening his controlled classicism to a vision of man.

Cet ouvrage de 400 pages superbement illustré présente la vie et loeuvre dAndré Arbus (1903-1969), l'histoire d'une fidélité à la tradition française et d'une quête « d'unité dans la vie artistique de son époque ».
Le retour à la tradition, prôné dans son article sur le mobilier, ouvre en 1935 une voie nouvelle entre l'ébénisterie traditionnelle défendue par Ruhlmann et l'« équipement » standardisé de Le Corbusier. Le décorateur choisit la mesure de l'homme, « cette géométrie du cur » qu'il reconnaît dans le classicisme du mobilier français.
Fournisseur attitré du Mobilier national dans l'immédiat après-guerre, il crée des meubles, des tapis, des luminaires pour l'Élysée, le château de Rambouillet, les ministères et les ambassades. Cet humaniste témoigne d'un registre créateur très étendu.
Ordonnateur de prestigieux paquebots, architecte d'« Une maison de la famille française » à l'Exposition de 1937, des mas du pays de Crau ou de monuments maritimes comme le phare du Planier, il se consacre à partir des années 50 à la sculpture, ouvrant son classicisme maîtrisé sur une vision de l'homme émouvante.
